I'm a gamer, I've played video games since I was little and it's a hobby I've carried through to adulthood. I can't imagine that I will give it up for the foreseeable. But how will I game? Tech is changing, form factors are shifting, who knows where we'll end up. I will resolve each of these answers YES if I use them between 1st Jan and 31st Dec 2035.

To cover my current gaming: I have a Switch and Steam Deck which both see fairly regular use, and a gaming PC which sees rather less. I have older consoles knocking around for the occasional hit of nostalgia. I don't play games on mobile, although I have done in the past (primarily emulators or Pokémon Go). And I have an OG Valve VR headset gathering dust because setting it up is a faff. I basically never play at arcade cabinets, and I don't use any game streaming services.

To get into a bit of detail about what criteria I bundle each of the answers into:

  • Home Console: a device primarily for playing games, connected to a television set. I would resolve this YES if I have a Switch or Steam Deck equivalent that I also connect to the TV. Right now I have both and use them in docked mode.

  • Handheld: a device primarily for playing games, with a built in screen and gaming inputs. Again, if I have a Steam Deck or Switch equivalent, I'd resolve YES to this.

  • Smartphone: a general-purpose computing device that fits in my pocket, and does not have dedicated gaming inputs (though these could be added through accessories). If I end up with something like a Sony Xperia Play (which I did have) then I'd resolve this YES despite the dedicated gaming inputs.

  • Augmented / Virtual Reality: any device that you wear on your face, regardless of whether it's self contained or docked to any of the other devices.

  • Arcade Cabinet: a box as big as a person with a screen and gaming inputs.

  • Brain/Computer Interface: anything that interacts directly with my brain or nervous system to either receive control inputs or make me see things.

  • Streaming to any device: where I play games on something that is not intended primarily for gaming but it does have the ability to add a controller and stream games that are not installed or processed locally. Examples might be TVs, phones or tablets.

  • Holodeck: a room I can go into which looks like the holodeck from Star Trek The Next Generation and can create a gaming environment.

  • PC / Laptop: a general purpose computing device that requires a screen, keyboard and mouse.

  • Something totally other: something that is not clearly any part of any of the other categories.

As I control the outcome of this market, I will not bet.
