Infectious diseases have long posed a significant threat to human health and have caused considerable mortality and morbidity throughout history. Advances in public health, vaccination, and medical treatment have led to the control or elimination of some infectious diseases. However, eradicating all infectious diseases from human civilization remains an ambitious and complex goal, given the diverse range of pathogens, their modes of transmission, and the constant emergence of new infectious agents.
Will all infectious diseases of all types be effectively eliminated from human civilization before January 1st, 2040?
Resolution criteria:
This question will resolve to "YES" if, before January 1st, 2040, all infectious diseases are effectively eliminated from human civilization, as evidenced by:
The absence of any reported cases of endemic or epidemic diseases caused by viral, bacterial, fungal, or parasitic pathogens, including newly emerging infectious agents, for a continuous period of at least three years.
The establishment of effective public health measures and healthcare infrastructure to prevent the re-emergence or resurgence of infectious diseases, including comprehensive surveillance, rapid response capabilities, and access to appropriate medical care and treatment for all populations.
The elimination of zoonotic diseases from the human population, with no evidence of ongoing transmission between humans and animals.
A successful demonstration must be accompanied by:
Publicly accessible data and reports from recognized global health organizations, such as the WHO, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), or the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), documenting the elimination of all infectious diseases from human civilization.
Independent validation of the results by at least two separate entities with expertise in infectious diseases, epidemiology, or related fields. These entities can be research groups, institutions, or companies.
The publication of the findings in one or more peer-reviewed scientific journals, detailing the global elimination of infectious diseases and the public health measures implemented to achieve this goal.
I will use my discretion when resolving this question, possibly in consultation with experts.
