YouTube will release an AI-powered comment summarization feature for creators by March 15, 2025. The feature will use AI to analyze comments on videos and generate summaries of key discussion topics, questions, praise, and complaints. It will provide an overview of comment sentiment and themes that goes beyond basic statistics, showing AI capabilities on par with GPT-3 and above.

The comment summarization feature does not need to support all YouTube creators or videos initially, but must be made available for a significant subset, such as creators above a certain number of subscribers or views.

Limited, low-level AI features that output only simple statistics or counts will not satisfy this claim.

@traders this is getting a lot of traders but I don't feel like I have enough info to judge it clearly. I don't want to be in a situation where traders are betting on my resolution tendencies, nor do I want a contentious resolution, nor to hold people's mana only to NA soon and waste the investment time.

A base comparison might be: Does the system provide a useful result if I selected all text of comments then asked gpt-3 or later models to summarize major questions, themes, responses, complaints? Based on the screenshot of what it looked like a year ago, the image doesn't show what I would expect even a simple manual version of this to include.

Here is what the above prompt generates (https://chatgpt.com/share/67d5e3cf-ac9c-8003-b4f8-dcf2a83d904f)

And here is a manual analysis with gpt4.5 of the comments section of a big manifold market: https://chatgpt.com/share/67d5e4fc-714c-8003-9309-fd496ce6d584

I'd expect that an official function would provide something similar to manually copying all comment text into gpt and asking it to summarize. Does it?

@Ernie
YouTube only has "comment topics". It only generates brief topic titles and definitely does not match the quality of summary that GPT-3 could produce (if you pasted in the entire comments section and asked it to summarize key topics). It also does not sort comments into categories such as questions, praise, and complaints (your criteria in the description). I think this should resolve to NO.

It looks like this:

Why is the current comment summarization feature not enough to resolve this YES? Is it because it’s not able to be turned on/off by creators themselves?

@jumpman_folder What specific feature are you referring to?

1mo

@jumpman_folder I don't have enough comments to evaluate what the current setup is like. Could you share images or details? Before resolving I'll look around and see what this actually is, too

@Ernie https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/14239105

It’s the same thing as the comment posted a year ago. It’s limited to comment sections of a certain size and only on mobile

@jumpman_folder That looks like a yes to me

1mo

@jumpman_folder @Ernie yeah I’m just confused why it wasn’t resolved a year ago then if that was sufficient

@jumpman_folder I would like more examples of what this looks like. Does it meet this requirement? "The feature will use AI to analyze comments on videos and generate summaries of key discussion topics, questions, praise, and complaints. It will provide an overview of comment sentiment and themes that goes beyond basic statistics, showing AI capabilities on par with GPT-3 and above."

The example from @firstuserhere below is interesting but it looks like it just contains a list of summarized comments. I don't see sections for what a creator would want, like "questions users have" ordered by frequency, overall sentiment & counts for each type of response, summaries of the main discussion threads and comments, etc.

@Ernie this is how summarized comments look on popular videos on YouTube mobile:

And when clicking on a topic:

@PeterNjeim btw is there a way to activate this? Because I have YT Premium and Gemini Advanced and latest update of the YT app yet I have till date never had this feature

1mo

@Ricky30235 I think it's only for popular videos. Go on a MrBeast video and see if you get it

1mo

@PeterNjeim ohh I see, thanks

Is this done? I have heard that it may be for some creators

fyi, amazon has also started doing this with their customer reviews for most products, for me.

"AI generated from the text of customer reviews"

@firstuserhere wow it's actually happening

..

predictedYES 1y

@firstuserhere cool, could you link me one? I've looked randomly at a few but don't have that. I wonder if it's scoped per video, or per user?

predictedYES

@Ernie sure. I actually get it for a mixture of the two - for a given creator, I get it on only a few of their videos, and i do see it for other creators too. For example,

for this video

Or

for this video

predictedYES 1y

@firstuserhere actually I see a few more categories for some videos, such as "timed", where comments appear according to what timestamp people were at when they commented, or "video replies" which is a throwback to 2011? YouTube where you could post videos in comment sections to reply, but now they're all shorts. There was also some "play ai music" option I got but I seem to have lost it now

predictedYES 1y

@firstuserhere interesting. I went into that second video on my android device and definitely don't have the "Topics" comments subsection divider. So it may be based on user identity, abtest, android/iphone, but at least is not at 100% rollout yet.

predictedYES

@Ernie yeah for sure. Don't seem to be getting it on YouTube in browser for the same video on the same account when I got it on app

predictedYES 2y

Thinking about this again now, perhaps they will just provide a comment API and let third parties handle it.
