Any live service game that will no longer be playable by the end of the year?
Please add answers :)
Friday the 13th research Jan 1 2025:
Disclaimer: I hold NO
There's a very evocative drop in active players visible in the graphs here: https://steamdb.info/app/438740/charts/#48h that makes me think there was some sort of server-side shutdown.
BUT some players still persist.
That doesn't prove anything by itself though because these sites would track players in the app, not necessarily playing the game. So we need to look further.
I found some Twitch streams running, but at least one of them was using recorded gameplay.
One looked like actual gameplay though (https://www.twitch.tv/galaxybon), and I asked in chat if it was still playable, someone replied that it was. Insufficient evidence/detail by itself I'd say.
This stream also included a link to a YT video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a1eRaIP_i0U) describing how you can work around a "database login failure" that presumably started at the same time as the graph decline.

According to this video and some comments, this solution works on PC to allow online play.
I would guess that the developers intended it to be no longer playable online (I'm assuming that "database login error" is just the easiest way they had to enforce this) to conform to the license situation, but yeah, modders gonna mod their way around simple solutions.
Uncertain if there's even an offline mode that could also count as playable, but I'd say a only-offline mode would be far enough from the original experience that we can good faith say it isn't playable.
Conclusion: Imo there are a couple of indications the game is playable online by using a mod, but I can't be certain as I don't own the game myself, so can't verify this.
Data points:
Major player drop at time of expected shut-down
Some players still ingame (doesn't prove anything, could be idling in menu)
>1 Twitch streamer showing what appears to be gameplay
Person in Twitch chat telling me it is still playable
A YT video claiming it's still playable and providing a fix (I can't verify)
Positive comments on the YT video indicating satisfaction, but only 1 explicitly saying it fixed it for them (rest could just be reacting to the idea of it, rather than the functionality of it)
I’m pretty sure it’s gone. I had thought the “at least” part of the announcement meant a significant life after but that wasn’t the case. I don’t think “technically workable but with a mod” really fits the definition of live regardless, though the description of “no longer playable” leaves some wiggle room I suppose.
@jacksonpolack end of year it looks like
Last year, publisher Gun Interactive announced it was delisting the game on December 31, 2023, due to the publisher losing the Friday the 13th license. While the servers are still up and running, the same statement also revealed that the servers would shut down on December 31, 2024.
@strutheo their statements were always weird. they said "until at least dec 31 2024" everyone always seemed to understand that more like... "at most" myself included. but theyve actually been dead fucking silent on socials even as the deadline approaches, which is weird i feel like
@NoahRich I’m betting no in the hopes that it’ll still be playable in some fashion for a few days after the 31st.
@RobertTyphi can't say that's a bad bet. Hard to know what they're gonna do. the whole life cycle of this game has been peculiar.
Already removed from steam, servers scheduled to shut down EOY https://gamerant.com/friday-the-13th-game-max-level-boost-kills-legendary-perks-unlocked/
