In 2020, Crypton Future Media released a beta of their own AI-based singing synthesis engine, which they called “New Type”, with a later full release occurring in 2021 alongside the full release of the new Hatsune Miku voicebanks for this software. This was in response to the earlier release of YAMAHA's VOCALOID5 software. Many considered it to be barely an improvement upon VOCALOID4 (such as because of its use of the increasingly outdated “concatenative synthesis” method of singing synthesis, used as far back as VOCALOID2 in 2007). In some regards, it was even considered a step back (stripping out features from VOCALOID4 and earlier without proper replacements). This caused many companies in the VOCALOID/general singing synth space who previously released voicebanks on the VOCALOID engine to step out and look at other software. Few options were available at this point in time that made heavy use of modern machine learning technology, and thus is likely why Crypton Future Media opted to make their own software.

The Hatsune Miku New Type voicebanks received a middling reception, with New Type vocals having more noticeable “engine noise” and other audible artifacts that were not present in Hatsune Miku voicebanks released for VOCALOID. Many artists who have used Hatsune Miku as vocals for songs before continue to stick to voicebanks released for YAMAHA's VOCALOID software for new songs. Additionally, there have grown to be more AI-based options for commercial singing synths since New Type was released, such as Synthesizer V AI, CeVIO AI, and VOCALOID6.

Will Crypton announce they intend to release a singing-oriented voicebank for something other than New Type at some point before the end of 2026, or will they stick to their guns? The voicebank does not have to be a Hatsune Miku voicebank, it could be one of their other characters.
